We are a global destination for additive manufacturing and advanced materials solutions, where manufacturers find top technology, talent, and manufacturing solutions in the beautiful Commonwealth of Virginia.

We’re on a mission to create agile, resilient, and affordable solutions for advanced manufacturing.

Leveraging our strategic location on the East Coast and wide array of regional assets, the Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (AM2) Tech Hub is supercharging the innovation economy and creating an ideal business environment for industry. With support for the Economic Development Administration’s Tech Hubs Program and the Virginia Initiative for Growth & Opportunity (GOVA), private and public sector partners are joining forces.

Why This Work Matters

National calls for reshoring manufacturing have exponentially increased, as manufacturing is imperative to the economic resilience, innovation, and continued security of American society. Today, additive manufacturing and advanced materials production are key drivers in reshoring and transforming American manufacturing, and according to Business Research Insights, this industry will support net-zero carbon emission goals and greatly accelerate industry growth over the next several years.

This Tech Hub identifies the industry and supply chain gaps, leverages unique assets from the New River Valley and Southern Virginia regions to fill those gaps, and ultimately propels advanced manufacturing into the future.

Led by Virginia Tech, Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, and GENEDGE, AM2 Studios streamlines regional manufacturers’ access to equipment and expertise to solve industry problems related to but also outside the scope of AM2 technologies.

Our work includes:

  • Visiting a regional manufacturer to assess immediate needs and adoption readiness for AM2 and other advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Prototyping or validating new 3D printed equipment using VT and IALR test beds
  • Using digital twinning to model new, efficient processes that integrate AM2 technology
  • Characterizing and refining new materials for product application
  • Providing work-based learning opportunities to students and future workers in the Studios while connecting them with regional manufacturers as possible future employers

Roanoke-Blacksburg Innovation Alliance leads a team of innovation partners to increase the speed to market of products for new and existing regional manufacturers, supporting the space-up of manufacturers.

Our work includes:

  • The AM2 Innovation Challenge is an industry-led competition that bridges the gap between lab-scale innovation and industrial application by identifying, funding, and accelerating the most promising technological solutions to key manufacturing challenges
  • Proof of Concept (POC) projects with regional companies are designed for high-complexity, multi-dimensional challenges that exceed the current technical bandwidth or risk tolerance of regional manufacturers. By offloading early-stage R&D to Virginia Tech teams, regional manufacturers avoid the common pitfall of diverting their best production engineers to speculative projects
  • The End-to-End Commercialization Pathways program helps existing startups and manufacturers navigate regional resources and contract with local or non-local subject matter experts. Fellows may identify market opportunities for existing patented technologies or support manufacturers with validation, scaling strategies, and patent protection

With dozens of talent partners, the AM2 Career Network addresses the dire need to create a seamless pipeline of reliable and adaptive manufacturing technical talent.

Our work includes:

  • Expanding middle school GO TEC programming to expose students to manufacturing opportunities and skills needed for 3D printing and precision machining, material characterization, and machine programming
  • Developing 9th and 10th grade bridge programming to seamlessly guide interested students from middle school into more advanced workforce training in 11th and 12th grades
  • Creating and implementing the nation’s first industry-accredited certification system for additive manufacturing
  • Working with manufacturers to develop, manage, and fund new internship and apprenticeship opportunities. This includes connecting manufacturers with more regional engineering talent coming out of four-year universities

Let’s make additive manufacturing and advanced materials technologies easier to commercialize and grow entrepreneurial startups around these technologies!

We are pulling together existing programs and generating new activities that increase the transparency of the process and support those wanting to take technology to market. Let us know how we can help.

Possible future projects include:

  • Identify and promote Virginia Tech’s and other regional partners’ Intellectual Property (IP) for 3D printing, materials, and machinery
  • Bootcamps and acceleration cohorts for additive manufacturing and advanced materials
  • Increase access to capital and markets for companies focused on characterization and post-process quality assurance for materials and additive manufacturing parts
